About YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA
Formed in 1978 by Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Yukihiro Takahashi, Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) debuted in the same year as the album YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA, released by Alpha Records. In 1979, a remixed version of the album was released internationally, marking the group’s global expansion. They performed their first overseas concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, followed by the “TRANS ATLANTIC TOUR,” which took them to the UK, France, and the USA. The success of this tour ignited a techno-pop boom in Japan, turning YMO into a social phenomenon. In 1980, they embarked on an even larger international tour, performing 15 shows across 7 countries. In 1983, YMO “scattered” (disbanded). YMO then “regenerated” (reunited) in 1993, and after performing a live concert at Tokyo Dome, went into hiatus. Although the group occasionally reunited over the years, 2023 marked a tragic turning point with the passing of Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Yet, YMO’s music continues to resonate worldwide, inspiring an ever-growing number of followers and shaping the global music landscape.
